Endocannabinoid System: What Happens When It Gets Out of Whack?

The endocannabinoid system is responsible for maintaining homeostasis in the body. When it gets out of whack, it can cause a wide variety of health problems. In this blog post, we will discuss what happens when the endocannabinoid system malfunctions and how you can restore balance to your body.

The endocannabinoid system is a network of receptors located throughout the body. These receptors are responsible for binding to cannabinoids, which are chemical compounds that are produced by the body. There are two types of cannabinoids: endocannabinoids and phytocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids are produced by the body, and phytocannabinoids are found in cannabis plants.

The endocannabinoid system plays a role in a variety of physiological processes, including appetite, pain sensation, mood, and memory. When the endocannabinoid system is not functioning properly, these processes can be disrupted.

Symptoms of Endocannabinoid Deficiency

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, you may have an endocannabinoid deficiency:

  • Difficulty regulating body temperature
  • Frequent headaches or migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Chronic pain
  • Anxiety or depression
  • Improper regulation of digestion, food & sleep

How to Restore Balance to Your Endocannabinoid System

There are a number of factors that can contribute to an imbalance in the endocannabinoid system. These include stress, poor diet, lack of exercise, and exposure to toxins. If you suspect that your endocannabinoid system is out of balance, there are a few things you can do to restore balance:

  • Eat a healthy diet. The foods that you eat can play a role in balancing your endocannabinoid system. Make sure to include plenty of fruits and vegetables in your diet. Avoid processed foods and sugary drinks.
  • Exercise regularly. Exercise is another important way to maintain balance in the body. It helps to reduce stress and promote overall health.
  • Reduce stress levels. Stress can wreak havoc on the endocannabinoid system. Make sure to take some time for yourself every day to relax and de-stress. Yoga, meditation, and deep breathing exercises can be helpful tools for reducing stress.
  • Reduce alcohol consumption. Like stress, heavy alcohol consumption can reduce the repair and growth of new endocannabinoid receptors. While moderate alcohol use may not severely impact the endocannabinoid system, heavy drinking and binge use can severely impair your CB receptors’ ability to process cannabinoids.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-three fatty acids are known to have anti-inflammatory properties. They can be found in fish, nuts, and seeds. Adding omega-three fatty acids to your diet may help to reduce inflammation and restore balance to the endocannabinoid system.
  • Use cannabis products. Cannabis products like CBD oil can help to restore balance to the endocannabinoid system. CBD oil is non-intoxicating and does not cause a “high” feeling. It is available online or at dispensaries in states that have legalized cannabis.
